When the Air Stops Blowing: Honda Element Blower Fan Resistor Failure

A customer reached out after noticing their Honda Element suddenly lost airflow from the vents. The A/C was cold, the fan motor was functional, but the air barely moved. This is a classic sign of a failed blower fan resistor, a small but essential component that controls the fan speed settings inside the cabin.

The Problem

On the Honda Element, the blower fan resistor often fails from age, moisture intrusion, or heat buildup inside the HVAC housing. When the resistor burns out, the blower motor can lose one or more speeds — and in many cases, only high speed will work while the lower speeds disappear completely.

In this vehicle, all fan speeds stopped working. The HVAC system still produced cold air, but with no airflow through the vents, the A/C was unusable.

The Repair

Our technician removed the glove box assembly to access the resistor block mounted near the blower motor. The old resistor showed clear signs of heat damage. A new resistor was installed, and the electrical connector was inspected and cleaned to ensure proper contact.

After replacement, the blower worked perfectly on all speed settings. The customer immediately had full airflow back in the cabin, and the A/C system operated as intended.

Why This Matters

The blower resistor may be small, but once it fails, you lose essential control over your ventilation system. Without airflow, defrosters stop clearing the windshield, the heater becomes ineffective, and the A/C can’t keep the cabin cool. Replacing the resistor early prevents stress on the blower motor and keeps the HVAC system functioning efficiently.
